				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: justify;">This is a part two of my story about redesigning a community lounge for homeless mothers and their children and babies. It will highlight the most exciting moments of the design implementation. (<strong><a href="https://vydesign.co.uk/helping-the-homeless/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="color: #000000;">Part 1</span></a> </strong><span style="color: #000000;"></span>describes the design process).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One issue was that I did not know what kind of donations the children and staff from <strong>Marymount International School<span style="color: #000000;"></span></strong> would bring. That meant I could not plan the design scheme in detail until the actual day of installation!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I arrived after the implementation of the design had already begun. The walls had been painted in specified colours and some furniture had been assembled. The new lighting fixtures had also been installed. The girls from Marymount were just finishing clearing the area and arranging their donations.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I brought the art prints with me, but the frames were already on site. I therefore had to frame them in situ, before hanging them on the walls. This is not an ideal situation, as commercial frames and mounts are not always exactly to size, and it is better to have a professional framer to frame art prints. On the other hand, there is a huge cost saving in using pre-bought frames and mounts, so for this project we had no choice.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There were some issues, but I got them framed and hung up on the walls.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: justify;">Working with homes and interiors, it is easy to get carried away. Luxury finishes, exciting new products, perfectly planned spaces. In reality, most people have to compromise on what they can afford, and some cannot even call anywhere their home.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To help those people, I decided to volunteer and design a community space a<span style="color: #000000;">t<a href="https://www.evolvehousing.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Evolve Housing + Support" style="color: #000000;"><strong> Evolve Housing + Support</strong></a></span> a London-based charity for homeless people. Their goal is to provide homeless people with a safe, friendly, educational and aspirational environment.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The community lounge and kitchen in their premises at Stockwell was a mess, but they wanted it to be a multifunctional social space where homeless mums could cook, study and learn new skills, while their children played safely nearby.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Louisa Bull, Resident and Engagement Quality Officer at <strong><a href="https://www.evolvehousing.org.uk/understand-our-work/about-us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Evolve Housing + Support"><span style="color: #000000;">Evolve Housing + Support</span></a></strong>, worked with me in developing the design, and it was a pleasure to work with her. As I explain in my next blog, children and staff from <span style="color: #000000;"><a href="https://www.marymountlondon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Marymount International School" style="color: #000000;"><strong>Marymount International School</strong></a>, an <a href="https://www.marymountlondon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" style="color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;"></a></span>independent day and boarding school for gilrs in Kingston upon Thames, also helped to implement the project.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: justify;">The design concept was based aroung values of Evolve Housing + Support. It had to be designed in that way that the young homeless mothers would feel inspired, confident and ready to learn new skills. while their children would feel safe and thrive in a great learning and creative enviroment.</p>
<p>The community lounge had a view out to<span style="color: #000000;"> the <strong><a href="https://www.londonpicturearchive.org.uk/view-item?i=93310&amp;WINID=1771494391331" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="King George's House"><span style="color: #000000;">King George&#8217;s House</span></a></strong></span><strong> </strong>historically known as a home for working boys aged 14-18.</p></div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p style="text-align: justify;">Do you like the crackle of logs on an open fire? If you do, you aren’t alone &#8211; fireplaces and wood burning stoves are popular features in any home, traditional or contemporary.<span style="font-size: 14px;"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Unfortunately, storing the logs is often a challenge. If you have a rustic design scheme, piles of fresh cut logs may be just what you’re looking for. On the other hand, they can easily look out of place in a contemporary arrangement. Worse still, they tend to fall down, use up space, and leave bits of mud and bark all over the place.<span style="font-size: 14px;"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Luckily, you can get log holders with a more practical design. This photograph is of a contemporary log store and carrier by Fallen Fruits. It is more practical than a log pile; it uses lots of vertical space which keeps the footprint small. You can also use the handle at the top to move logs in from a wood store.<span style="font-size: 14px;"> </span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The log store has a black metal frame put together with bolts, so it would fit right in if your room has industrial elements. On the other hand, its slim, dark and geometric form is simple enough to blend into lots of other schemes as well, especially tucked into an ingelnook and filled with fresh cut logs. If you’re tired of collapsing log piles, something like this is well worth a look.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_11  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light">

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p><span style="text-align: justify;">When our elder daughter took her first steps, many years ago, my husband and I were thrilled. However, as our home had an open staircase that was not designed with a toddler in mind, this also meant that our previous interior design scheme was no longer appropriate &#8211; we either needed to move house or remodel it.</span><br /><span style="text-align: justify;">Life changes often mean a new design is required. That is something many people face today, when COVID-19 has forced them to work and look after children at home. Houses have become offices and schools first, and homes last.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you don’t have a home office, redesigning your home to make space for working has become a priority. But you need a clear strategy to avoid chaos.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">For a great home workspace ask yourself the following questions:</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;">
<li><strong>Will I have enough natural light? </strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">Plenty of natural light boots productivity and well-being, so it’s very important to prioritise this factor.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><div id="attachment_655" style="width: 668px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-655" class="size-full wp-image-655 lazy" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20658%20989'%3E%3C/svg%3E" data-src="https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1.png" alt="Plenty of Natural Light in this Location" width="658" height="989" data-srcset="https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1.png 658w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1-200x300.png 200w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1-450x676.png 450w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1-16x24.png 16w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1-24x36.png 24w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-1-32x48.png 32w" data-sizes="(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px" /><p id="caption-attachment-655" class="wp-caption-text"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Image: Andrea Davis</span></p></div></p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="2">
<li><strong>Where will the natural light come from?</strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">Glare and shading can occur, particularly due to direct sunlight. So, it’s worth experimenting before deciding where to put your desk.</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="3">
<li><strong>What artificial lighting do I have?</strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">You don’t need to be bound by your room lighting. As long as you have handy sockets, desk or floor lamps can help to provide enough light for working.</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="4">
<li><strong>Will I have enough space to put a work desk and chair?</strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">Architectural guidance suggests that the minimum space for a desk and chair should be 1.5 m x 1.5 m and if you’re looking at an area with restricted head height, you need somewhere at least 1.4 m high.</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="5">
<li><strong>Can I still concentrate despite distractions?</strong><strong></strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px;">Some design sources and magazines suggest creating a mini-office space by setting up your desk and chair in a niche &#8211; for example under the stairs. It&#8217;s not a bad idea &#8211; but only if you can work as other members of the household move around behind you. Secluded areas can have other distractions. Expropriating your kids&#8217; playroom, with scattered toys, pink walls or superheroes, makes it just as hard to concentrate.</p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="6">
<li><strong>Is the furniture appropriate?</strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">If you feel more organised and motivated in a room with formal arrangement, then living room or reception room could be an option, providing you find a space for a desk and ergonomic chair. Forget the images in magazines &#8211; if you try to make do with furniture designed for relaxation and conversation, like armchairs, coffee tables and footstools, your back and neck will certainly not thank you.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><div id="attachment_656" style="width: 818px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-656" class="size-full wp-image-656 lazy" src="data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20808%20539'%3E%3C/svg%3E" data-src="https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2.png" alt="A beautiful but impractical layout" width="808" height="539" data-srcset="https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2.png 808w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-300x200.png 300w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-768x512.png 768w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-660x440.png 660w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-450x300.png 450w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-24x16.png 24w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-36x24.png 36w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-48x32.png 48w, https://vydesign.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Picture-2-272x182.png 272w" data-sizes="(max-width: 808px) 100vw, 808px" /><p id="caption-attachment-656" class="wp-caption-text"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Image: Karolina Grabowska</span></p></div></p>
<ol style="text-align: justify;" start="7">
<li><strong>What equipment do I need? </strong></li>
</ol>
<p style="padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;">Now so much work is electronic, it’s amazing what can be done with just a laptop. However, not everyone can have a minimalist working environment. You may need to think of a place for papers, stationery, printers and the like. Electrical items will need charging points or sockets without wires snaking across the room.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Finally, you don’t have to struggle along yourself. An interior designer can make your home better for working, not just better looking. The lockdown is temporary, but a well-designed working area will stand the test of time.</p></div>
